Policy and Institutional Arrangements for Social Safety Net Program in Bangladesh: An Overview

This chapter provides an overview of the historical development of the current social security system in Bangladesh since its independence and the paradigm shift from the poor relief-based social safety net program to the life-cycle-based social security system in Bangladesh. A brief discussion has been made on the innovations and driving factors of the National Social Security Strategy (NSSS) which is the current social security system of the country. This chapter presents the Gender Strategy of NSSS as well as the disability-supported social security program. Apart from that, institutional arrangements for service delivery of the disabled allowance program for rural level beneficiaries have been illustrated. Lastly, this chapter discusses the procedure, goal, objective and eligibility for getting enrolled in the disabled allowance program.
