Lotus Petal Flap

Lotus petal flaps, first described in 1996 [1] for use in reconstruction of vulvo-vaginal defects, are perforator flaps of the perineum based on the internal pudendal artery. The lotus petal flaps’ advantages include a thin, pliable adipocutaneous flap with reliable vascular pedicle over a rich anastomotic network that lies outside the zone of injury of any midline structures including the urethra. The flap can be orientated in numerous ways to suit requirements of a particular defect. Bilateral flaps can be reliably raised in cases where additional soft tissue and skin are needed. Donor sites are well tolerated. Lotus petal flaps have a wide use in reconstruction of the genitalia and the perineum. We present the novel use of lotus petal flaps in perineal urethrostomy [2].
