Role of Geospatial Technology for Sustainable Development in India

India, the second largest country in population and the seventh largest country in area is the fifth largest economy of the world. It is heading to achieve five trillion dollar economy by the year 2025 to become third largest economy in the world. This rapid stride requires concerted efforts at all levels. India is progressing to achieve the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of Global Development Agenda (2015–2030) decided at UN Sustainable Development Summit, New York (2015). There are 17 goals and 169 targets. SDGs are blue print to achieve a better and more equitable and sustainable future for all. The critical measures for sustainable development are accountability, transparency, and tractability. These are reinforced through geospatial technologies. Geospatial technology acts as agents of transformation for achieving the Sustainable Development. While space exploration, to find life elsewhere in solar system, is being done, sustenance of life on earth is questioned. Why? Efforts for sustainable development are done. But why are they inadequate? Everyone is desired to contribute in this mission. Every initiative for sustainable development at global level is commendable; however, this paper attempts to find the significant role played by geospatial technology in making sustainable development a reality in India. Broadly, it attempts to discuss the initiatives taken in India for (1) Geospatial Technology, (2) Geospatial Institutions, and (3) Geospatial Applications for sustainable development.
