Harnessing the Antifungal Potential of Natural Products

This chapter explores recent advances in antifungal drug development, with a specific focus on harnessing the potential of natural products. Fungal infections present a global health challenge, exacerbated by the emergence of drug-resistant strains and limitations in current treatment options. The review highlights the diverse array of natural compounds and their effectiveness against various fungal pathogens. The mechanisms of action exhibited by these natural agents range from interactions with fungal cell membranes to modulation of critical cellular processes. Insights into structure–activity relationships provide a basis for the rational design of more potent and selective antifungal compounds. Furthermore, the review discusses innovations in drug delivery systems and formulations aimed at improving the bioavailability and efficacy of natural antifungal compounds.
