Antifungal Drug Discovery Using Bioinformatics Tools

Natural compounds have long served as valuable sources of medicine throughout history, with many commercially significant drugs originating from these compounds. Besides, researchers have also tried to design synthetic compounds which act as promising antifungals. The conventional methods employed in the discovery of natural and synthetic products often entail substantial time and financial investments. Unfortunately, these labor-intensive techniques have struggled to keep up with the rapid advancements in high-throughput technologies. In the contemporary landscape of extensive data generation across the realm of biosciences, the field of bioinformatics assumes a pivotal role. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the domain of drug development and design. Surprisingly, the potential application of bioinformatics strategies to harness knowledge related to natural and synthetic products has received limited attention thus far. In this chapter, we delve into the realm of bioinformatics studies that have made notable contributions to the realm of medicinal products research, encompassing both natural and synthetic sources. We accentuate specific areas within medicinal product research wherein the utilization of bioinformatics methodologies could potentially expedite the discovery process, resulting in more efficient and cost-effective pathways toward identifying remedies derived from natural and synthetic origins.
