Conclusion

Liang Qichao’s “unfettered translation” has played an important role in the history of modern Chinese translation culture, and how to objectively evaluate it is a serious academic issue. It should be noted that indirect translation and rewriting are the two most prominent features of Liang’s “unfettered translation”: on the one hand, most of his translations were based on Japanese works or Japanese versions; on the other hand, he often made certain modifications to the source texts in order to express his political concerns.
