Conclusion

If nothing else, the preceding ten chapters should have made it clear that civics and citizenship field is field that is made up of many different aspects. This is especially true if one considers all the different overlapping or sub fields with which it interacts, and the various methodologies and approaches with which it has been researched. Yet it is also diverse in terms of the points of views about how we should best educate young people. Perhaps because of this diversity, it is also a field that is undergoing something of an identity crisis, in which various scholars are questioning what civics and citizenship might look like ten or even twenty years into the future. In the Australian context, interest in civics and citizenship certainly seems to increase and decrease in cycles – often at the best of political intervention as much as any other reason.
