Zero-Knowledge Proofs in Biometric Authentication Systems: A Review

Authentication systems are created to confirm the legitimacy of people or organizations requesting access. To guarantee that only authorized users are given access, it is crucial to maintain privacy and security throughout this procedure. Biometric information is extremely private and persistent. The centralized storage of biometric data makes it vulnerable to thefts, abuse, or unauthorized access. To overcome these challenges, researchers are actively looking for methods that can provide uncompromised privacy and security to biometric authentication systems. One such method is Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) that can authenticate any identity without disclosing their original identity. This method when combined with biometric authentication holds the interest of many researchers. The study here explores various ways in which ZKP methods are combined with biometric authentication. The findings of this study will help to develop safe and privacy-focused solutions for reliable authentication procedures.
