This chapter of this book, titled “Salinology”, invites readers on an intriguing exploration of the world of salinity—the comprehensive study of the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of saline environments. Often overshadowed by freshwater sciences, salinology offers indispensable insights into the distinct characteristics and dynamics of salinised ecosystems. The chapter unfolds in three sections, each delving into a different facet of salinology. The first section, “Physical Properties”, delves into the unique physical attributes that define saline environments, such as salt flats and saline wetlands, crucial for understanding their ecological processes and challenges. Following this, the focus shifts to the “Chemical Properties” in the second section, elucidating the chemical composition of saline ecosystems and its impacts on both abiotic and biotic components. The intricate relationship between chemical properties and the thriving life within saline environments underscores the remarkable adaptations to extreme conditions. Lastly, “Biological Properties” takes centre stage, offering a glimpse into the diverse array of organisms, from halophytes to halophiles, and their strategies for thriving amidst high salinity.
