“Robinson Crusoe as a Transpacific Novel: Hospitality, Recognition, Translation” examines the history of Pacific-language translations of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719), with particular attention to those in Māori (1852) and Hawaiian (1860). Hessell argues that, despite the fact that the novel is set in the Caribbean, it has become an important touchstone in Pacific literary history and needs to be reconsidered within Pacific literary and cultural traditions.
