Entrepreneurship for Women in Rural Odisha: Evolution Over the Past Five Years and Socioeconomic Relevance

  • Surekha Routray

摘要

In rural India, pervasive stereotypes see women as lacking financial acumen, thus perpetuating a self-reinforcing cycle of dependency. This perception, rooted in prioritizing earning skills over caregiving, has left women reliant on male partners for financial support. Recognizing this challenge, the Indian government has initiated programs to improve women’s economic position. The rise of micro-entrepreneurship, notably through self-help groups (SHGs), has empowered rural women. This paper examines the transformative impact of women-led micro-enterprises in rural India, specifically in Odisha, over the past five years. By fostering financial independence, enabling decision-making, and augmenting family incomes, these enterprises have elevated women’s social status and contributed significantly to the local economy. This research sheds light on the evolving dynamics within rural communities, showcasing the positive influence of women’s entrepreneurship on both societal and economic dimensions.
