Oldest Old Adults and Mobility: Accessible, Safe, and Affordable Transportation
摘要
In this chapter, transportation is highlighted as a crucial issue for promoting active and healthy ageing of oldest old adults, including those with mobility restrictions. Studies on transportation and mobility among this demographic are limited. Adults aged 80 or older face significant challenges, including a reduced access to transportation and unmet mobility needs. It’s worth noting that driving may remain feasible until very old age, with some individuals in their 90s still able to drive. However, many oldest old adults are non-drivers, and their use of regular public transport reduces significantly. Among the major obstacles encountered in relation to bus use are unhelpful drivers, excessive distances to bus stops and difficulties with entry and exit. Without access to safe and affordable public transport, oldest old adults may struggle to maintain an active and meaningful life. Developing inclusive transport services that are genuinely age-friendly necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the diverse needs and abilities of users, especially regarding functional limitations such as physical, sensory, and cognitive deficits.
