Ageism: The Need for New Imagery for Growing Old
摘要
This chapter presents and discusses ageism as a widespread and socially condoned type of discrimination. The COVID-19 pandemic has starkly exposed ageism and its profound consequences for older people. The detrimental impact of ageism on the health of older individual is emphasized. Ageism is often associated with deteriorating physical and mental conditions and an increased likelihood of premature death. The concept of ageism will be defined and illustrated in its various forms, recognizing it as a multifaceted phenomenon with relational and institutional dimensions. It is indeed possible to identify discriminatory practices at both the interactional level and within institutional settings across various sectors such as social services, health care, workplaces, media and legal systems. However, it is crucial to recognize that ageism can also be self-inflicted. Older individuals themselves may hold preconceived notions about what it means to be old and what can and cannot be done at a certain age, self-limiting and socially excluding themselves. Combating ageism is crucial to foster healthy and active ageing. The World Health Organization considers it a prerequisite for promoting healthy ageing.
