The evolution and alteration of software requirements are a constant phenomenon. Change Impact Analysis (CIA) plays a crucial role in recognizing the sections of source code that are influenced by these changes in requirements. This analysis is key to understanding the repercussions that alterations can have on systems. Since the 1980s, the effects of changes in systems that utilize a single programming language have been a subject of research. However, our current understanding suggests that the application of CIA in systems involving multiple languages (MLS) is still not thoroughly explored. When dealing with MLS, it’s essential to consider the interactions between components developed in various programming languages. Misjudging the impact of changes in such systems can adversely affect their performance. In this study, we explore CIA in MLS from the perspective of those in the field to gain insights into their existing methods and requirements. We conducted a survey with 69 developers and held eight in-depth interviews. Our findings indicate a significant demand in the industry for CIA tools specifically designed for MLS. Presently, many developers rely on testing procedures and manual evaluations for Change Impact Analysis. This absence of standardized CIA methods increases the vulnerability of MLS to potential risks following changes. The insights gained from this study could be beneficial for researchers and corporations, aiding in the enhancement of their research on multi-language development and better equipping them to handle its inherent complexities.
