Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in Drug Purposing

The De novo drug discovery process has been time-consuming, with high attrition rates and huge financial investment. Improving the success rate can save time and avoid substantial financial loss to the pharmaceutical industry. Utilizing the already authorized drugs for novel indications (drug repositioning) has shortened wait times and boosted success rates. To date, various approaches have been used for the repurposing of the drugs. However, the advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning has shown considerable improvement in drug repositioning by using a neural network approach that can predict previously unknown connections or targets. The current chapter discusses the various techniques based on artificial intelligence and machine learning used for drug repurposing and the challenges involved.
