Agroforestry: A Practical Means of Achieving the “Net-Zero” Target

摘要

Climate change is one of the major crises of the era and is unfolding even faster than we anticipated. A significant milestone on the global level to address this grave issue is the “net-zero” emission target. In this context, agroforestry is emerging as a viable tool for accomplishing this target by sequestering carbon in above-ground and soil biomass. It is a constructive approach for carbon sequestration to alleviate the impact of the climate crisis under the “Clean Development Mechanism” of the Kyoto Protocol. This book chapter explores the vital components of agroforestry (productivity, adaptation, and mitigation), which help in the depletion and removal of the flow of GHGs released into the atmosphere. It highlights the carbon sequestration scope of various agroforestry-based practices both locally and globally. It also showcases the government initiatives to support agroforestry and its recognition in climate change policies. Furthermore, it compares agroforestry with conventional agriculture as a major carbon sink, along with food security, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem services. Hence, by sequestering carbon dioxide, lessening greenhouse gas emissions, and endorsing sustainable land use, agroforestry systems can play a crucial role in combating climate change and contributing towards carbon neutrality. The multiple benefits of agroforestry not only make it an attractive option for farmers but also offer economic opportunities while contributing to environmental amelioration. Governments and policymakers must recognise the potential of agroforestry and provide ample support and incentives to encourage its adoption on a larger scale to achieve the targets as soon as possible.
