Agroforestry from a Global Perspective: Recent Developments, Technological Advancements, and Emerging Research Trends

The promotion and implementation of agroforestry systems has substantially progressed in recent years. The immense scientific developments over the last five decades have provided valuable insights into the benefits of agroforestry systems, such as increased crop yields, improved soil health, and enhanced biodiversity. This has also cleared the door for the development of novel techniques and technologies that maximize the integration of trees with agricultural activities, making agroforestry more accessible and desirable to farmers worldwide. Researchers have seen the potential of agroforestry to alleviate environmental challenges, increase agricultural sustainability, and reduce and adapt to climate change. Agroforestry is now widely established and recognized, ranging from its application on the farm to the landscape scale. Agroforestry practices have been incorporated into forestry and agricultural programs worldwide, including in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The knowledge base on agroforestry has been improved and expanded by ongoing research and innovation, enabling its wider adoption and scaling up in the future. Agroforestry has shown promising results in enhancing biodiversity, improving soil biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. This chapter discusses the present status of agroforestry, novel practices and techniques, technical breakthroughs, rising research trends, and several agroforestry advantages such as improved biodiversity and ecosystem services and enhanced resistance to climate change. Agroforestry systems also play an important role in assisting local populations by providing them with long-term livelihood alternatives and food security in the face of shifting weather circumstances.
