摘要

Implantable drug delivery systems (IDDSs) have emerged as a promising approach to address the limitations of conventional drug administration methods. This chapter comprehensively reviews IDDSs, covering their introduction, advantages, disadvantages, applications, types, components, challenges, limitations, and future directions. IDDSs offer significant advantages over traditional drug delivery methods, including sustained and controlled release of therapeutics, improved patient compliance, reduced systemic side effects, and enhanced therapeutic efficacy. These benefits have led to diverse applications across various medical specialties, including hormone replacement therapy, pain management, and cancer treatment. However, IDDSs also present disadvantages and limitations, such as potential device-related problems, the need for surgical implantation, restricted drug compatibility, and associated challenges. This chapter explores these issues, along with the impact of IDDSs on improving patient compliance. It also examines current research efforts and novel strategies aimed at overcoming these obstacles and advancing the field of implanted drug delivery. Finally, this chapter offers perspectives on future directions and innovations in IDDSs.
