Colloidal drug delivery systems represent a dynamic and versatile approach in the field of pharmaceuticals, offering enhanced therapeutic potential and targeted delivery. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various colloidal carriers, including liposomes, niosomes, phytosomes, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), polymeric nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, metallic nanoparticles, and self-assembling colloidal systems. Each system is examined for its unique structural characteristics, mechanisms of action, and applications in drug delivery. Liposomes and niosomes, being vesicular systems, offer biocompatibility and efficient encapsulation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs. Phytosomes enhance the bioavailability of plant-based bioactive compounds. SLNs and NLCs provide controlled release and stability for lipophilic drugs. Polymeric nanoparticles allow for versatile drug conjugation and targeted delivery, while carbon nanotubes and metallic nanoparticles bring exceptional physical properties and multifunctionality. Self-assembling colloidal systems and nanoemulsions facilitate the delivery of poorly soluble drugs, enhancing bioavailability. Dendrimers, with their highly branched structure, and nanogels, offering a hydrophilic network, support diverse therapeutic applications. Lipospheres and self-emulsifying drug delivery systems further expand the scope for enhancing drug solubility and absorption. Through a detailed discussion of these systems, their preparation methods, and therapeutic applications, this chapter aims to highlight the advancements and future potential of colloidal drug delivery technologies in improving healthcare outcomes.
