Targeted Brain Delivery of Therapeutics

Even though many bioactive agents have the ability to treat diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), few of these agents have been used in the field because the brain has hurdles that make it hard to get to the CNS. CNS disorders like dementia, epilepsy, panic disorders, meningitis, and brain tumors are hard to treat because it is difficult to get sufficiently higher bioavailable drug at the target sites. As a part of CNS anatomy, the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and the blood–cerebrospinal fluid barrier keep protected the surroundings of the brain, neural activity, and maintain CNS’s proper working. A large of approaches have been investigated for desired CNS delivery of therapeutics. This chapter summarizes the current ways to open or make it easier for drugs to get through these hurdles and reach into the CNS. These methods can be put into three main groups such as noninvasive techniques, invasive techniques, and other techniques. We have summarized the success made with these methods and the issues and progress in this domain.
