This chapter provides an overview of Iran’s water crisis, examining its historical roots, current state, and multifaceted impact on the society, ecosystems, and the economy. It explores the complexities of migration, economic losses, and the policy and governance landscape, addressing the challenges and potential solutions. The chapter emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable water management practices, specifically the optimization of water usage in agriculture, and explores a range of government initiatives, policies, and adaptation programs, such as Groundwater Resources Reclamation and Balancing Plan, National Adaptation Program for Water Shortage, interbasin water transfer projects, sea water desalination, and deep-water explorations, aimed at mitigating the crisis. Public awareness and education campaigns play a pivotal role in fostering responsible water use at both individual and community levels. International cooperation with neighboring countries and regional organizations is necessary to address shared water challenges and establish collaborative efforts for sustainable water resources management. In conclusion, the chapter sheds light on the intricate balance between addressing water crisis and ensuring sustainability, offering valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders seeking to navigate water crisis in Iran.
