The shortage of skilled engineers in industry worldwide highlights the need to develop both technical and soft skills, particularly in developing countries where the identification, development, and use of industry 4.0 technologies can provide a competitive advantage to small enterprises. This paper presents a class methodology undertaken by 24 senior engineer undergraduate students, as part of an optative specialization in Industry 4.0 having as partner a screw manufacturer. After identifying needs and opportunities of the screw manufacturer, the students analyzed how the use of cloud computing, cognitive computing, and mixed realities could be implemented at the facilities of the industrial partner. Through this paper, we present the way in which students carried out their project before presenting the best ideas to the industrial partner. For validation of their skillset, a comparison of entry and exit surveys is presented, as well as the qualitative comments given by the industrial partner.
