Changing Student Perception of the Aesthetic Experience Using Artificial Intelligence in a Higher Education Institution in Northwestern Mexico
摘要
Understanding art from an aesthetic experiential perspective means enriching the appreciation of the work. In higher education, students’ belief in this value is not explored, only accepted. By providing tools and technology to enhance the aesthetic experience and strengthen their artistic identity as creators, college students can increase their appreciation and knowledge of art while developing skills for today's technology-driven marketplace. In this article, we analyzed whether students perceive artificial intelligence (AI) as improving the aesthetic experience. We examined (2) whether artistic practice supported by an image generator can improve students’ aesthetic experience. The 26 participants were students in the “Posthumanism Ethics and Technology” course, an elective course at a private higher education institution in the northwestern region of Mexico, in the state of Sonora. The students come from different bachelor's degree programs and semesters (from the first to the fifth semester). They create a work of art using DALL-E, an AI. System that creates images from written descriptions. We also concluded that further studies are needed to understand whether imaging AI is suitable. It can enhance the aesthetic experience and understanding of artistic practices. Research and development in the arts in higher education can enjoy studies that focus on the student perspective to provide scholars with new and innovative processes to achieve intended educational goals.
