Basidiomata annual, centrally stipitate, fleshy to brittle. Pileus circular, convex at first,then applanate, umbilicate or depressed, sometimes infundibuliform, up to 20 cm in diameter; surface dull greyish black, with dull grey to black brown large scales; scales thick, imbricate, usually much larger and tilted at centre, concentrically arranged; margin acute, wavy, incurved. Hymenophore toothed. Teeth greyish white at first, then deep brown, conical, 2–3 per mm at centre, up to 10 mm long. Context nearly white when fresh, dirty white to pale grey at maturity, up to 1 cm thick at centre when dried. Stipe pale brown, cylindrical, equal or enlarged at base, up to 7 cm long, 2.5 cm in diameter. Basidiospores 6–7 × 5–6.5 μm, subglobose, hyaline, slightly thick-walled, verrucose, inamyloid, slightly cyanophilous.
