Insights from the National Fertility Surveys

The goal of this chapter is to provide readers with an understanding of the information available for studying remarriage in the National Fertility Surveys (NFS). Two key strengths of the NFS for studying remarriage are its large sample size and long temporal coverage. Another strength is the inclusion of information on the timing of key family transitions, including divorce and remarriage that allows for reconstruction of individual (and couple) family life histories. In this chapter, our goal is to ensure that readers are aware not only of what can be done with these data, but also of their limitations.
