Experimental Investigation of SBS in Dispersion Oscillating Fiber

Dispersion oscillating fibers (DOFs) with an engineered longitudinal dispersion profile are expected to possess significant stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression properties. We present the detailed SBS characterization of a fabricated DOF and compare it with similar lengths of standard single mode fiber (SMF) and a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and find that the threshold, frequency shift and the spectral widths are significantly different. We also demonstrate four wave mixing characterization and present the pathway toward better DOF design for nonlinear applications.
