Analysis of Blast Wave Impact on FBG Sensor Inside Shock Tube

In this work, we have studied the response of FBG sensor to blast waves inside a Vertical Shock Tube (VST). The VST facility is used to generate blast waves with decay times in the order of a few milliseconds to simulate explosive events. Experiments with perpendicular and parallel orientations of FBG sensor with respect to impinging blast wavefront have been carried out. FBG sensor assemblies for both configurations have been developed which can be incorporated into the shock tube. PCB pressure transducer is used to record the blast pressure profile. Bragg wavelength response and response time characteristics of FBG sensor have been studied. FBG sensors were shown to be suitable for these aerodynamic impulse test facilities.
