Voices from the Establishment

An intellectual Establishment, whose members were well-known and well-recognised, wielded considerable influence. Their influence derived from proximity to those in power or because they occupied those seats of power themselves. This chapter provides portraits of some of these figures, including a cosmopolitan senior minister and cultural theoretician, a top religious official, and a leading editor with easy access to senior leaders. Other Establishment journalists receive attention, as does a well-travelled Ministry official who had recently turned inward to the immediate cultural world around him, a pragmatic civil servant at the helm of an important government entity, and a scholar bent on reinvigorating Malaysian culture by creating works for the general public, among others. The chapter observes that these individuals supplied the intellectual cachet that senior leaders at the time did not possess and notes that their positions were privileged, but also vulnerable to shifts in the political winds.
