Data Collection and Transmission in Digital Twins

摘要

Data in a variety of forms, ranging from video, audio, image, text, to sensor data, provides us with a comprehensive understanding of the research vessel. For example, the navigation equipment and resources onboard, such as Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) and Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA), could reveal the ship status and safety level to some extent when navigating in busy waters. Data can be used not only for mining meaningful information, but also for enabling agility in an ever-changing environment and empowering data-driven decision-making. It will be demonstrated throughout the book that the use of the data plays a key role in digital twin development, from modeling and simulation (Chap. 5 ), to enabling tools (Chap. 6 ), to advanced applications (Chaps. 7 , 8 , and 9 ). To fulfil these functions, data needs to be collected continuously and transmitted to local repository or remote control center (RCC), depending on where the twin system is deployed, for training, testing, and verification. In this chapter, we will introduce what and how data is collected and transmitted, stored for the development of the twin ship system [155].
