Arsenic Contamination of Groundwater in Myanmar: A Review by the Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department

Myanmar, in Southeast Asia, is categorized as a Least Developed Country, facing substantial challenges towards meeting 2030 Sustainable Development Goal targets, including ensuring access to safe water and sanitation. IWUMD is currently conducting heavy metals pollution of both surface and ground water especially for irrigation and domestic usages. From 2004 to 2011 testing the Ayeyarwaddy Region, tested in 17 out of 26 township and ground water is saline remaining a township in general. Tested the 13 blanket and 4 selected testing township and a total of (1,239,692) samples tested for arsenic content. In Ayeyarwaddy Region, the most arsenic contamination is in shallow tube well about 50–150 ft depth water resources. To reduce high content of arsenic in groundwater, we can use very simple method- can used gravel sizes can be chosen as 15 mm, 12 mm, 10 mm and also coarse sand, medium sand and fine sand filter should be applied in this gravel sand filter.
