Distribution of Oil and Gas Resources in Africa

Africa consists of 54 countries including Egypt, the Republic of South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, is the second largest continent worldwide. Seventy sedimentary basins have developed in Africa, cover an area of 3020 × 104 km2. Onshore sedimentary basins have a total area of 2023.4 × 104 km2 and mainly consist of cratonic and rift basins. Offshore sedimentary basins have a total area of 996.6 × 104 km2 and mainly consist of passive margin basins. Africa has abundant oil and gas resources. 9.3% of the world’s oil and gas resources are concentrated in Africa. The total recoverable oil and gas resources in Africa are 1740.0 × 108 tons of oil equivalent.
