Economics of the Remediation Techniques for the Stone Mine Spoil Sites

Mining has been a vital part of human civilizations and economic systems since ancient times, with extraction of minerals, stones, and coal being vital to local economies. However, mining operations can result in unanticipated changes to a region’s social structure. Mining has historically played an important role in economic development, employment, infrastructure, and providing raw materials to society. The stone mining sector in India and overseas contributes significantly to the nation’s infrastructure development and economic expansion. However, mining has had a huge negative influence on the environment and society in general. Remediation techniques for stone mine spoil sites should be considered to ensure the safety and sustainability of the mining industry. Vegetation is a prominent remedial measure for mines, as it enhances soil quality, prevents soil surface erosion, and promotes the formation of new self-sustaining topsoil. Physicochemical remediation approaches are limited by their high cost and ecological risks. The economics of rehabilitating stone mines varies depending on factors such as site size, environmental impact, vegetation restoration, water management, infrastructure removal, erosion control, community involvement, monitoring and maintenance, and regulatory requirements. Larger sites require more resources and efforts. The aim of this chapter is to comprehend the role and influence of mining on the economy overall, with a specific focus on stone mines, and to explore the economics aspects of remedial measures for their rehabilitation or policies aimed at managing these mined areas.
