Amenable Agroforestry Approaches for Restoration of Mine Spoil Areas

Mining activities on a global scale disturb approximately 0.4 million km2 of land, resulting in significant land degradation and environmental consequences that include the generation of substantial quantities of mine spoils. Mining, despite its role in promoting industrial growth, has significant negative impacts on the environment. These include deforestation, nutrient depletion, soil and water pollution, and the disruption of ecosystems and biodiversity. The presence of high concentrations of heavy metals in mine spoils has detrimental effects on soil chemical and microbial activity which hinders the process of re-vegetation. The discharge of acidic substances from mining waste, particularly acid mine drainage caused by the oxidation of pyrite, intensifies the negative effects on nearby vegetation. To address these challenges, a scientific approach is essential for reclaiming mine spoils, surpassing natural restoration methods, and enabling successful re-vegetation and stabilization. This chapter focuses primarily on various methods, including agroforestry, phytoremediation utilizing native and exotic plant species, plant-microbe consortium, and organic soil amendment used for rehabilitation of mine spoil areas. These methods have undergone extensive research and have been proven to yield promising results, as evidenced by documented successful case studies.
