摘要

While the adoption of sustainability practices is a matter of increasing concern for each and every one of us, universities have a dual and pivotal role to play in strengthening the pillars of a sustainable society. Consequently, universities are expected to practise what they preach and, in this context, the research objectives of this study are three-fold. Firstly, this research aims at assessing the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices by public universities based in a developing country being Mauritius. Secondly, this study intends to assess the determining factors that promote the implementation of environmentally sustainable practices. Thirdly, the policies established to encourage universities to adopt environmentally sustainable practices in some developed and developing countries will be compared. In order to achieve the research objectives, this study adopted the qualitative and quantitative research methods. The findings demonstrate a low level of adoption of environmentally sustainable practices by universities and the variable factors of adaptability by employees, continuous development of programmes of studies’ curriculum and simplicity of methods are individually found to have a significant effect on the universities’ adoption of environmentally sustainable practices.
