The human body requires a variety of minerals to maintain its intricate daily homeostasis. These minerals participate in a broad spectrum of biological processes, intricately involved in cell signaling, nerve function, muscle operation, bone integrity, fluid equilibrium, and metabolic regulation. Macro-elements, typically requiring over 100 mg/day, play a pivotal role in ensuring optimal physiological processes. Despite stringent regulatory mechanisms, occasional imbalances may lead to a variety of disorders and many serious health consequences. This chapter scrutinizes the roles of six major macro minerals – calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), potassium (K), and chlorine (Cl) in human health. Imbalances in calcium affect bones, muscles, nerves, kidneys, and heart rhythms. Phosphorus disorders impact bones, soft tissues, and kidney function. Magnesium disorders contribute to conditions like hypertension, insulin resistance, headaches, and mood disorders. Sodium deficiency causes nausea and seizures, while excess leads to hypertension, edema, and heart issues. Potassium imbalance influences muscles, nerves, and cardiovascular health. Chloride disorders result in complications like vomiting, diarrhea, metabolic alkalosis, and cystic fibrosis. This comprehensive exploration covers various dimensions of these minerals, including functions, metabolism, deficiency risks, and potential consequences of excess intake, associated disorders, and their regulation.
