摘要

Synthetic amino acid supplementation has been shown to be an effective method to reduce dietary protein levels and lower feed costs in livestock. Tryptophan (Trp) has been commonly considered the fourth limiting amino acid after lysine, methionine+cysteine, and threonine in corn-soybean meal–based diets for pigs. The biological roles of Trp in the maintenance of gut health and nutritional balance have been well documented both in humans and animals. This chapter will discuss the application of dietary Trp on swine production at different stages, with a focus on the growth performance in postweaning piglets, nutrient requirements in growing pigs, and gestating and lactating sows.
