The Function of Tryptophan Metabolism in the Gut

Intestinal tryptophan (Trp) metabolism generates a variety of bioactive compounds or metabolites that act both in the local gut and peripheral organs at different developmental stages, affecting the pig’s health. This chapter describes the anatomic characteristics of the porcine gastrointestinal tract and its development and recapitulates the current understanding of the biological roles of Trp and its metabolites in the regulation of gut development, immunity, and gut microbial homeostasis. Additionally, how Trp metabolism-mediated nutritional intervention modulates the reproduction performance in sows, the mother-to-offspring nutritional transmission, and the effect of Trp metabolites on interorgan interactions are also discussed in this chapter.
