Exploring Bamboo as a Potential Alternative to Steel Reinforcement Bars for Reducing Environment Footprint

  • Sounak Bandyopadhyay

摘要

As there is a rapidly growing concern regarding the environmental consequences of construction materials and practices, it becomes increasingly important to explore sustainable alternatives. This research delves into the benefit of adopting bamboo as a potential replacement for traditional steel TMT bars in construction applications. Bamboo, a rapidly regenerating and abundantly available natural resource with impressive mechanical properties, emerges as an enticing option for mitigating the construction industry’s environmental impact. The study assesses the environmental impact of bamboo and steel reinforcement bars’ production, transportation, and disposal. It employs OpenLCA 1.11 software for life cycle assessment (LCA) and utilizes the ReCiPe 2016 Endpoint (E) method encompassing 22 impact categories. The results indicate that bamboo demonstrates minimal environmental impact across all 22 impact categories, establishing its potential as a viable substitute for steel reinforcement bars.
