Preserving the Blue Carbon: The Role of Coastal Wetlands in Sustainable Development

Coastal wetlands are dynamic ecosystems found at the interface between land and ocean. Despite their seemingly limited extent across the globe, they perform a multitude of ecosystem services crucial for achieving global sustainable development. However, the role of coastal wetlands in sustainable development scenarios is weakly addressed. Therefore, in this book chapter, we elaborate on coastal wetlands, their extent, and their intricate relationship with sustainable development, shedding light on ecosystem services, ranging from provisioning to cultural values. The significant role of coastal wetlands in providing critical habitats for various species, supporting abundant fishery resources, acting as unsung heroes of the environment, mitigating floods, regulating climate, purifying water, and offering recreational and cultural benefits is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development goals. The climate mitigation strength, carbon and nitrogen cycling, the relationship between coastal wetlands and climate change, and the various threats, challenges, and conservation efforts for the protection and sustainable management of these ecosystems are also well-addressed. Sustainable management of coastal wetlands encompasses regulating water withdrawals, controlling pollution, and managing stormwater runoff; encouraging sustainable fisheries involves implementing quotas, regulating gear, and safeguarding critical habitats. Restoration strategies focus on replanting native vegetation and removing invasive species; sediment replenishment counters erosion, while hydrological restoration reconnects wetlands to tidal waters; wildlife management maintains healthy ecosystems by controlling invasive species and protecting nesting sites. Conservation strategies involve public awareness, education campaigns, and economic incentives. International cooperation addresses transboundary threats, sharing information, and developing joint plans. Scientific research supports understanding wetland ecology and guides restoration efforts. These comprehensive approaches protect coastal wetlands, ensuring their resilience and the well-being of coastal communities for generations.
