Ecosystem Services of the Trans-Himalayan Region with Special Reference to Ladakh: An Overview

The Trans-Himalayan region in India, characterized by its unique geographical and demographic features, plays a crucial role in shaping the country’s ecological and cultural wealth. Encompassing states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and the union territory of Ladakh, this region spans diverse landscapes, including cold deserts and arid mountainous areas. Despite facing harsh climatic conditions, the Trans-Himalayan region (THR) boasts distinctive flora and fauna, adapted to extreme temperatures and low precipitation. The altitudinal gradient reveals varied vegetation zones, from alpine desert scrub to oasis vegetation, showcasing the resilience of plant life. This region delivers a multitude of ecosystem services, ranging from provisioning services like food and timber to regulating services such as flood control and water purification. Additionally, cultural values, aesthetic enjoyment, and spiritual significance contribute to the region’s ecosystem services’ multifunctionality. Pastoralism and agropastoralism are integral to local economies, highlighting the delicate balance required for ecological integrity and community livelihoods. Effective management of natural resources necessitates a holistic approach, incorporating biodiversity conservation, sustainable water management, and traditional knowledge. This study explores the Trans-Himalayan Region (THR) in India, focusing on its climate and vegetation, landscape characteristics, ecosystem services, and the management of natural resources.
