The Nexus of Ecosystem Services and Human Wellbeing: Case Study from the Forests of Western Ghats, Kerala, India

Fertile soil, clean air—nature’s bounty sustains us. Forests, in particular, stand as powerhouses of biodiversity, delivering a cornucopia of goods like food, timber, and materials alongside vital environmental services like climate regulation and oxygen production. Yet, these ecosystems face unprecedented threats from population growth, and land-use change, often driven by their perceived lack of economic value. This chapter delves into the complex relationship between humans and the moist deciduous forests of Western Ghats, Kerala, employing the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment framework to quantify the economic worth of services these ecosystems provide. Through detailed valuation procedures, the authors shed light on the hidden economic contribution of provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting services rendered by these vital ecosystems, facilitating informed decision-making on policies, alternatives, designing appropriate institutional and market (and non-market) instruments, and conservation tools like Payment for ecosystem services. By revealing the true economic power of forest services, this research aims to bridge the gap between environmental and economic considerations. The chapter provides insights that will empower policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize conservation efforts, design sustainable management interventions, and ultimately fulfil the aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals. This valuation exercise serves as a clarion call, urging us to recognize the immense, often invisible, value of nature and prioritize its protection for the well-being of present and future generations.
