From Vulnerability to Resilience: The Role of Community Participation in Landslide Risk Mitigation in the Himalayan Region

The susceptibility of the Himalayan regions to landslides depends on multiple factors, such as fragile topography, erratic and incessant precipitation, and unbridled anthropogenic activity. As a result, there is a perpetuating situation of landslide activities during the 2023 southwest monsoon in various pockets of Himachal Pradesh, like Manali and Shimla’s Dudhli. This chapter explores the role of community participation in transforming landslide vulnerability into resilience. It focuses on the importance of rethinking the role of both community and scientific consciousness in managing risks before, during, and after a disaster. The exploration involves community knowledge through indigenous practices, collaborative efforts, and self-driven community initiatives. From the outcomes of the data analysis, including the creation of landslide risk maps and impact monitoring, the identification and prioritization of innovative, locally adopted solutions such as community-driven afforestation and slope stabilization are prioritized. These probable solutions are closely aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 11 and 13 and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. This chapter concludes by advocating sustainable community participation strategies that lead to strengthening resilience, harnessing local knowledge, and community empowerment through grassroots initiatives.
