Landslide Mitigation and Sustainable Management and Policies

Landslides in the Himalayan region are a significant natural hazard with devastating consequences aggravated by undue human intervention. Fragile rocks, steep slopes, heavy monsoon rains, and earthquakes make the region particularly vulnerable. Consequently, it causes loss of life, damages infrastructure, disrupts livelihoods, causes structural damage, and substantial economic losses. With climate change exacerbating extreme weather events, frequency and intensity of landslides are expected to increase (Joshimath and Silkyara incidents). The Himalayas, with their complex geology and restless tectonics, face a constant threat of landslides. Balancing human needs with nature is a major challenge for policymakers, requiring immediate action and tailored solutions focusing on landslide mitigation, sustainable management, and area-specific policies combining engineering, ecological, and community-based solutions. This necessitates a proactive approach to landslide mitigation and sustainable management. The focus is on innovative measures and technological advancements that can mitigate landslides and ensure the safety and prosperity of their inhabitants. The Himalayas demand an integrated approach and a shared responsibility shift away from exploitation toward sustainable, collaborative relationship-built conservation. Local wisdom and community participation help to build a collaborative relationship with nature while connecting landslide mitigation, sustainable land management practices, and policies. Leveraging AI, satellite data and GIS, this study advocates both risk reduction and protective land-use policies toward mitigating landslides. This chapter explores analytically the multidimensional aspects of landslide mitigation, sustainable management practices, and policy interventions necessary for the ecological health of the Himalayas and the protection of its inhabitants.
