Towards Eco-Friendly Multi-compartment Transportation: A New Bi-objective Iterated Local Search Framework

In this article, we introduce a new bi-objective Mixed-Integer Linear Programming model for the Multi-Compartment Vehicle Routing Problem. This model offers a proactive solution to address the problem of toxic gas emissions resulting from incompatible freight transportation. The proposed optimization model simultaneously focuses on minimizing transportation cost while effectively reducing the environmental impact, with a specific emphasis on \(CO_2\) emissions. Given the NP-hardness of this problem, we develop a Modified Iterated Local Search algorithm. The developed model is evaluated by CPLEX using a set of randomly generated small-scale instances, medium and large instances from the literature. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
