Role of Vitamins in Multiple Sclerosis
摘要
Various types of diets have been investigated for their role in improving or exacerbating the status of Multiple Sclerosis. Analyzing individual components of each diet is essential to understand better how these diets affect MS. Diets high in fibers and certain dietary supplements or vitamins optimize the dietary regimen for MS patients. Indeed, fiber-rich diets are associated with improved cognitive function, which is mediated by the diet’s beneficial alterations to the gut microbiota and inflammatory response. Certain over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplements, such as caffeine, Omega-3, and Melatonin, potentially improve MS status or support MS therapy. Vitamins are the most extensively studied nutritional components. In particular, Vitamin D has a clinically proven role in MS pathogenesis and modulation. Other water-and fat-soluble vitamins are still under investigation and are showing promising results in inflammation, motor symptoms, and psychological manifestations of MS.
