摘要

In the intricate and dynamic world of swine production, the well-being and health of pigs play a vital role in the overall success of the farm. A scoring system for physical condition must be utilized to constantly monitor the productivity of the swine herd. Body condition scoring (BCS) system is one such important tool in swine production management which is used to assess the nutritional status, performance, stress levels, and welfare status of pigs. It can be measured either by visual, subjective or objective methods. In practice most commonly, the BCS score in pigs ranges between 1 and 5. Excessive emaciation is indicated by BCS 1, extreme obesity by BCS 5 and the sow’s reproductive performance is at its best around BCS 3. Body condition scoring gives a clear picture of the adequacy of the feed and the efficiency of the feed distribution system, which can be extremely helpful in managing sows in any scenario. At weaning, mid-gestation, farrowing and service, sows should have their conditions assessed. Thus, it implies that in addition to extending swine longevity, maintaining optimal BCS can enhance swine reproductive success and thereby overall farm profits.
