摘要

Pigs are quite important in India, especially for the lower socioeconomic sections of society. Total number of pigs in India during the year 2019 was 9.06 million (BAHS, 2023). Due to some innate characteristics like as high fecundity, improved feed conversion efficiency, early maturity, and short generation interval, pigs have a greater potential to provide farmers with a faster economical returns than the other livestock species. In India pork production is constrained, constituting merely 9% of the nation’s animal protein sources. As per ICAR-NBGAR at present 13 registered indigenous pig breeds are present in India. Apart from the registered breeds, some population of indigenous pigs are also found in India.
