Design, Development and Testing of Customization of Electrical Power Unit (EPU) Using PSM Tool

Electrical Power Unit (EPU) is one of the most important equipment from topside system in Subsea Industry. EPU comes in various designs based on input voltage, output voltage, kVA rating and Line Insulation Monitor (LIM) selection. Every time based on conditions like cable entry, door orientation, number of EPU controllers, Emergency Shutdown (ESD), etc., an EPU will undergo changes. Thus, an engineer spends significant time to develop design and all related design documentation for manufacturing of this specific EPU. Product Structure Management (PSM) is a tool in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. This tool helps in standardization and customization of various materials, and documentation, and create bill of materials (BOM). EPU variants covering all possible conditions will be pre-designed and a dependency matrix will be built. This dependency matrix will govern the logic built into PSM. Based on the inputs and logic built in, PSM will provide the pre-designed option from the data base to offer standard product. This paper presents how PSM tool will be used to develop a user interface which will enable the engineer to select options from pre- defined set and PSM will give the basic design of EPU along with materials and documentation. This would save significant amount of engineering efforts spent by Engineer every time. In this paper, all the possible variants of EPU are considered along with their design and documentation requirements. The significance of PSM tool in subsea industry is highlighted by this paper. Aim is to reduce the engineering efforts by at least 50% for every design.
