摘要

Types of magnetic materials have been discussed. The origin of magnetism in a system from atoms and molecules to particles is provided. In atom or metal ions (d- and f-blocks), spin contribution in magnetism is high in the d-block system, whereas orbital contribution is high in case of the f-block system in magnetism. Many examples exhibiting spin glass, ferromagnetic, and superparamagnetic properties are provided. With the change of particle size from micron to nanometer, their magnetic properties vary. Also, with the change of dimensionality of material from 3 to 2D or 1D or 0D, their magnetic properties vary due to the association of vacancy in lattice or dangling bonds. A few examples of layered systems and molecular magnets are provided.
