Other Applications of Deep Brain Stimulation

The domain of deep brain stimulation has numerous potential applications. With regards to deep brain stimulation therapeutic electrical stimulation can treat subjects with other neurological disorders beyond the scope of movement disorders by targeting the associated dysfunctional aspect of the brain’s neuroanatomy. For example, deep brain stimulation is a subject of potential therapeutic intervention for addiction, Tourette syndrome, treatment-resistant depression, obsessive–compulsive disorder, dystonia, epilepsy, and post-traumatic stress disorder. These novel applications for the expanded domain of deep brain stimulation offer considerable promise as a feasible therapeutic intervention strategy. An additional conceptually resemblant approach known as transcranial direct current stimulation is addressed in light of its considerable potential.
